Essiac Formula Garden Seed Collection [Not For Sale to Canada]

Essiac Formula

This set of seeds contains 1 generous packet each of the following: Burdock, Marshmallow, Turkey Rhubarb, Slippery Elm and Sheep Sorrel.

Yes, we know that marshmallow is not in the original formula. We are simply suggesting that marshmallow root is a good substitute for slippery elm bark, given the similarity of the active constituents in the two herbs, and their similar physical activity--moistening and soothing the mucous membranes of the GI tract. Marshmallow grows in a season, and slippery elm doesn't reach harvestable size for 11 years or so, which is a pretty long wait.

Note: We receive many requests for the original recipe for the Essiac anticancer formula and are printing it here as a service to those who would like to know.

6 1/2 cups Burdock dried root.
1 lb. Sheep Sorrel dried herb.
1 oz. Turkey Rhubarb root, aged 1 year.
4 oz. dried Slippery Elm inner bark or substitute with 4 oz dried marshmallow root.
1/5 cup of this mixture is simmered for 15 minutes in 3 cups of water to make a strong tea (decoction). This is strained, a cupful taken at bedtime on an empty stomach. We cannot attest to the tumour-reducing activity of this compound, but the herbs are clearly blood-cleansing, alterative, laxative, and demulcent in effect.

Disclaimer: This version of this famous Essiac anticancer formula is herein reprinted for historical interest only and is not intended to treat or mitigate any disease condition. Cancer is a serious disease, and there is no substitute for qualified healthcare.

Thistle, Milk seeds [Not For Sale to the State of Washington]
Organic (Saint Mary's Thistle) Silybum marianum

Milk Thistle

As an over wintering annual, the best way to grow milk thistle for seed production is to sow it directly in the garden in the summer. The first flush of germination is about 30%, which is fairly typical for a wild plant seed that contains plenty of inhibitors. Over the next year or two, the majority of the seeds will eventually germinate, which you may or may not notice. Anyhow these first plants will develop strong rosettes, which then over winter and go to flower the following spring, producing the thorny capitula filled with liver-protective seeds by midsummer.

Leave plenty of room for these plants to grow -- a good one can easily be 4 feet across and up to 6 feet or so tall. You harvest the capitula as the purple flower dies back to reveal the white pappus, and you can further dry them (after ripen) by putting them in a bushel basket or some such affair and stirring them daily with a stick (not by hand, please!) to afford even drying. After that, you pass them through a chipper and then you winnow out the seed. A seed cleaning screen would be very useful at this point. I use milk thistle seed, about a tablespoon a day, ground up in a little electric coffee grinder, as a valuable nutrient and hepato-protective agent.

For more on all this see my book "Making Plant Medicine" and the compiled set of publications that has a whole section on milk thistle, burdock, and other spiny but helpful plants.
